FC Volendam did not manage to keep the title fight with FC Emmen exciting tonight. On a visit to low flyer FC Dordrecht, the match was lost 3-2. The positive of the evening: two Volendam players have made their debut.
After obtaining promotion to the premier league last week Volendam looked uninspired at the Krommedijk in Dordrecht. The number seventeen was the better team and took a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute. Mauro Sevastano provided the opening goal by hitting the open goal after the ex-player of AZ and Ajax had set up the attack himself.
Volendam will quickly give something back
Eight minutes later, striker Stijn Meijer only went after goalkeeper Filip Stankovic after a clever cross pass from Christian Conteh. He passed the Volendam keeper and simply tapped in. The answer from the visitors was not long in coming. Robert Mühren made his 29th of the season after a combination between Gaetano Oristanio and Boy Deul: 2-1. At that time, left back Josh Flint had already been replaced by debutant Jay Koorndijk.
At halftime, however, the margin was again two. A long shot from Pascu went in nicely, making the title race seem over. Leader FC Emmen was already behind for some time at that time, but only with three points could the North Hollanders postpone the party with the Drenthearen.
No more real tension
There seemed to be champagne legs at FC Volendam. Yet Daryl van Mieghem had the 3-2 on his shoe. With a great shot from the center circle, he tried to surprise goalkeeper Liam Bossin. His attempt ended on the top of the bar. Also a substitute
Lequincio Zeefuik had the connecting goal on his shoe, but his effort face to face with Bossin went wide.
Yet it was still exciting with second debutant Billy van Duijl in the field. Franco Antonucci made his first of the season by blasting the ball into the goal from about twenty meters: 3-2. further came Not the New Orange, making it a party at FC Emmen. The club from Drenthe also lost (1-0), but FC Volendam’s defeat was enough for the championship.
Trainer Wim Jonk boarded the bus immediately after the interview with ESPN and did not respond to the NH Sport camera afterwards. Substitute Kevin Visser did. According to the veteran, a possible championship was indeed alive in the group of players. “I do,” said Visser. “Even though it took a miracle.”
