Nitrogen crisis: CDA departments de Peel want support from the rest of the party

Ten Brabant and Limburg CDA departments call on the rest of the party to take action against the nitrogen plans in and around the Peel nature reserve. The local parties believe that the national CDA and CDA States factions of Limburg and Brabant should move against the ‘tough plans’ of The Hague.

It concerns five Brabant CDA departments in Asten, Deurne, Laarbeek, Someren and Gemert-Bakel. In North Limburg, the departments in the municipalities of Horst aan de Maas, Peel en Maas, Venray, Nederweert and Leudal are participating. On Facebook they speak out against the government’s nitrogen policy.

Nitrogen plans
“With the nitrogen plans from The Hague for the Peel region, the cabinet seems to have completely lost its way,” write the municipal departments of the CDA. They refer to plans to drastically reduce nitrogen emissions around nature reserves, including the Peel. As a result, many farmers in the region will have to disappear.

The parties argue that this aim is ‘totally unrealistic’. “The CDA departments around the Brabant and Limburg Peel are of the unanimous opinion that this policy should never be implemented. It is wasted money, only to stimulate raised bogs in the Peel”, the departments jointly state.

The parties call on the CDA House of Representatives faction ‘not to bear any responsibility for these goals’ and want the CDA States factions from Brabant and Limburg to ‘register heavily in the same vein’. The parties decide that the cabinet plans do not match the principles of the CDA.

VVD also divided
VVD members also opposed the nitrogen plans of the cabinet and their own minister Christianne van der Wal (Nature and Nitrogen) on Saturday. A motion calling on the parliamentary group of the liberals to vote against the current cabinet plan was supported by 51 percent of the vote during the VVD congress after a fierce and heated discussion.
