The Nirvana bassist could imagine finishing old material using AI.
In a recent interview, Nirvana bassist and founding member Krist Novoselic shares his opinion on using artificial intelligence (AI) to produce new Nirvana music — and is enthusiastic.
The bassist responded to NME’s question about whether the remaining band members could imagine using old material to complete unfinished songs, as Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr did for their upcoming final Beatles track: “That is a good idea! […] “That’s interesting,” said Novoselic. “I will with Dave [Grohl] and Pat [Smear] address! I can’t wait to hear a new Beatles song. Come on, it’s the Beatles! I want to hear a new Beatles song! And if AI helps with that, then definitely – that’s just the way it is today.”
Novoselic’s response comes amid heated debates about the use of AI in artistic fields. Many artists are skeptical about the impact the programs could have on the industry, while others largely support the developments.
The musician isn’t sure if there’s any more material they could apply AI to, but expressed interest in talking to Grohl and Smear about it. “We have to start talking about it. That’s a good idea. That could be it,” says Novoselic.
But he still has one criticism: “There is a point at which it says: ‘Is this Nirvana on AI? There’s a lot of this stuff on YouTube already, and that’s a debate that needs to be had when it comes to copyright and disinformation. It’s like 2001: A Space Odyssey – ‘Don’t do it!'”
