Nirvana: IN-UTERO cellist was allegedly insulted by Courtney Love

Kera Schaley finds Love “pretty spiteful for a so-called feminist.”

Kera Schaley played cello on Nirvana’s album IN UTERO for the songs “All Apologies” and “Marigold”. After that she had no more contact with the band and only rarely spoke about their appearance on the record. But to celebrate the 30th album anniversary, Schaley was at the “Rolling Stone Music Now Podcast“ was a guest and talked about her meeting with Courtney Love. She said that the only thing she had read since her short time with Nirvana was an insult to Courtney Love in the Nirvana biography Come As You Are.

In the book in question, the band’s producer at the time, Steve Albini, described Courtney Love as a “Psycho Hose Beast” (in German, something like a “psychotante”). She then also responded in the work: “Steve Albini would only consider me a perfect girlfriend if I came from the East Coast, played the cello, had small earrings, wore black turtlenecks, had matching luggage and never said a word .”

Although Love doesn’t name names, Kera Schaley fits that description. The cellist previously described her relationship with Courtney Love as friendly on the podcast, but commented on her contribution in the book: “She doesn’t say my name, but she makes all these innuendos, and all my friends send me these things saying: Look what she said about me. And I thought, that’s pretty spiteful for a so-called feminist.”

Schaley also recalled getting a call from Love one night saying, “I’m sorry you thought I was talking about you.”

Nirvana’s 30th anniversary album IN UTERO will be released in a reissued deluxe edition on October 27th, which will include the original songs as well as other previously unreleased original recordings. More information is available here.
