Nintendo Switch Update 14.0.0: All new features at a glance

Nintendo regularly delivers updates for the Switch console. With the update to version 14.0.0 there is now another major update.

The past updates for the Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite were not exactly extensive. The manufacturer usually did not give any details – apart from system adjustments. It is therefore all the more gratifying that the update to version 14.0.0 with concrete innovations is now available. Among other things, it brings a folder function for the game collection.

Nintendo brings folders to the Switch interface

Anyone who is currently starting the Nintendo Switch (OLED) or the Lite version will automatically be notified of the update with version number 14.0.0. It installs itself in a short time and then restarts the console. The innovations in the firmware are then available.

Among other things, it is then possible to sort Switch games in folders. Nintendo calls the function “Groups”. Unfortunately, it is not available on the home screen, but only in the software menu. In addition, it can only be used if at least 13 different games have been played on the switch. 12 of them are listed next to each other on the home screen, with each additional game the button “All software” appears on the far right in the scroll menu. In the future, groups can be created in the form of folders via this.

Nintendo explains on its website, how the groups can be created on the switch. To do this, users scroll to the right on the home screen and click on the “All software” field. All Switch games that were previously loaded in the console or downloaded online by the user are listed here in tiles. So far, the games could only be sorted by “last played”, “playing time”, “title” or “publisher”. With the Switch Update 14.0.0 it is now possible to create and view groups using the L button.

To create a group, press the plus button. You can then select from all the listed games which ones you want to include in the folder. Once the games have been selected by clicking, “Next” takes you to the next step, where you have the option of sorting the order of the games in the folder. Clicking on “Next” again takes you to the last step – naming the group. A maximum of 100 groups, each with up to 200 titles, can be created in this way.

Innovation for Bluetooth headphones

Another new feature that the Switch update to 14.0.0 brings is the use of Bluetooth headphones. Nintendo introduced the option of connecting headphones to the switch wirelessly via Bluetooth with the update to version 13.0.0 in September 2021. Now it is optimized.

In the future, Switch players will be able to adjust the volume while gaming directly via the volume control on the headphones. Previously, this was only possible directly from the console, which was quite inconvenient. At the same time, Nintendo has increased the maximum volume.

However, there are limitations here too. In order to be able to control the volume directly on the headphones, they must support the AVRCP profile. AVRCP stands for “Audio Video Remote Control Profile” and is used for remote control of audio or video devices. The profile is supported by a wide range of headphones, including models from Anker, Sennheiser, Sony and Huawei.

Here’s how the update is coming to the Switch console

Nintendo makes new firmware versions available over the Internet. Usually, the switch will download them automatically once the console is powered on and connected. Depending on the size of the download, the update process can take a few minutes and may require a restart of the switch. If an update is not automatically displayed, users can search for it via the menu. In the system settings under “Console” and “System update” not only the current system version and available updates are displayed, the latter can also be triggered manually with just a few clicks.
