Nine killed in head-on collision in Texas: 13-year-old was behind the wheel | Car

Nine people, many of them college students, have been killed in a head-on crash in west Texas. One of the drivers involved appears to be a 13-year-old, according to police.

In a press conference on Thursday, it was announced that a 13-year-old child was behind the wheel in the traffic drama. The minor was driving a pickup truck, which ended up on the wrong side of the road.

The accident took place on Tuesday evening (local time), but an investigation into the burnt bodies took some time. On a two-lane road, just before the fatal accident, the pickup drove over a solid line on a two-lane road. An incredibly hard crash with a van was the result.

In that van were according to NBC News students on the golf team at a university in New Mexico (state bordering Texas). Members of the men’s team and women’s team were on their way for a match. Six golf team students died on the spot. The coach was also killed. The youngest victims in the van were two 18-year-olds.

There were two other students in the vehicle. A 19-year-old and 20-year-old man are said to have been taken to hospital in critical condition.

After some investigation, the Texas Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has determined that a 13-year-old and a 38-year-old man were also killed in the accident. The child is said to have driven the large car, according to identification of the human remains. The NTSB discovered that the left front wheel was a spare part. The spare wheel may not have been attached properly, causing the pick-up to drift to the left.

It is not known how and why the child was allowed to drive the car. The NTSB is an independent investigative agency and is only looking at how the deadly crash could have happened. Any criminal prosecution will depend on the prosecution.

Thousands of photos

NTSB chairman Bruce Landsberg took his time in a news conference Thursday to discuss the many road deaths in his state. It also seems that not all golf students wore their seat belts. At least one person was thrown out by the impact.

Lansberg: ,,We took literally thousands of photos of the accident site. There is no doubt about the impact of this crash. Two very heavy vehicles collided with each other at high speed. It sometimes seems like a bloodbath on our highways. Texans should really take safe driving a little more seriously.”
