Nine Europeans, including a Dutchman, arrested for role in Iran protests

Iranian authorities have arrested nine Europeans in recent days for involvement in the large-scale protests in the country. A Dutchman has also been arrested among them. That writes Reuters news agency Friday, based on a statement from the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence.

People from Germany, Poland, Italy, France and Sweden have also been arrested. In the statement, the ministry wrote that they were detained “during the riots or while plotting in the background”. For several weeks, large-scale protests have been taking place in Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after her arrest by the Iranian vice squad.

Amini was arrested in Tehran earlier this month for allegedly wearing “unsuitable clothing”. After her arrest, she died, according to human rights movements, because she was beaten up by the security services. Her death sparked outrage, first from Iranian women, who took off their headscarves and cut their hair in protest.

These demonstrations became the most violent protests in Iran in years. Iranian security forces are trying to crush the demonstrations with a heavy hand. On Thursday, the Norway-based human rights movement Iran Human Rights reported that at least 83 people were killed in the protests.
