Nine dead in Las Vegas car accident | Abroad

Nine people were killed in a six-car accident in Las Vegas on Saturday. This is reported by the police of Las Vegas, in the US state of Nevada. Another victim is still in critical condition in hospital.

The accident was caused by a driver who was speeding, according to police. The driver of a Dodge Challenger, a type of sports car known in the US as a “muscle car,” ran a red light just before the collision. The car then hit several vehicles. A total of fifteen people were involved in the accident.

It is not yet known whether the driver of the Dodge, who also did not survive the accident, had drunk too much or was under the influence of drugs or medication.

The number of deaths from auto accidents in the US rose 18.4 percent in the first six months of 2021 from the same period a year earlier, the Department of Transportation said in late October. It was also the deadliest first half of a year on US roads since 2006.

The number of road deaths rose after travel restrictions due to the coronavirus were lifted in 2020, after which traffic on US highways increased by 13 percent. Motorists also exhibited more unsafe behavior than before the pandemic, according to regulators, such as speeding and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Driving without seat belts also increased.
