“Especially” it was this victory in the “Rund um Köln” cycle race – this is how Nils Politt from Cologne described the triumph at his home race in the WDR interview on Friday (05/27/2022). For Politt it is also a sigh of relief after a less than ideal spring.
Illness killed Classics goal in Spring
Because after the Mallorca Challenge at the end of January, bronchitis threw him back. The form structure should actually be designed for the spring classics in April. But there it wasn’t enough for the front places, although he was always traded as a co-favourite. “I just missed two and a half weeks of training. If you’re not 100% fit, the classics are too hard.”explained the 28-year-old.
After the classics there was a small break in competition before he returned to the World Tour at Eschborn-Frankfurt and the Hungary Tour. With the success in “Rund um Köln” he was finally able to show that he was able to win races again – and also brought himself more clearly into the conversation for a nomination for the Tour de France.
