Freiburg’s record goalscorer
Attacker Nils Petersen is retiring from professional football at the end of the season. The 34-year-old will not extend his expiring contract with SC Freiburg and will end his career. Petersen announced this via Instagram.
“After almost 16 years of professional football, it is with a heavy heart that I am giving up my shoes at the end of the season. Thanks in advance to everyone who has accompanied me on my way, wished me luck week after week, congratulated me after victories and comforted me after defeats,” wrote the veteran, who thanked his former clubs and their supporters “for the wonderful years with me the most beautiful side thing in the world, which will always remain the main thing for me”.

Petersen, who is SCF’s record goalscorer with 104 goals, explained: “Everything that has an end also had a beginning. And a new beginning is not the same as the end. you hear from me Promised. Now I’ll invest everything again so that I can then say: ‘You should go when it’s most beautiful.'”
Petersen played by far the most games of his career for Breisgau (270), followed by Werder Bremen (72) and Energie Cottbus (63). In 2011/12, FC Bayern also played 15 games with four goals. The center forward made two appearances for the German national team, but he was never part of the squad at a European Championship or World Cup. However, Petersen took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with the DFB and only failed in the final against hosts Brazil. He recorded the highest market value of his career with 12 million euros in the summer of 2018.
