Nikkie Plessen plunges perfume chain Douglas into an outright PR nightmare. The company is showered on Instagram with reactions from angry customers, who call her a “racist”.
A year ago, Nikkie Plessen was more or less canceled by the inclusive community, because her new makeup line was very much aimed at white women like her. Of the seven shades of foundation she launched, five were for white women and two for all other skin tones. The savage reactions were quickly removed by Nikkie.
Nikkie under fire
Although Nikkie really had to release employees to curb the negative reactions on Instagram, the criticism did not stop. For example, she received severe criticism from BNNVARA presenter Ciana Mayam. The shit storm really started for Nikkie when stories about discrimination at her company surfaced.
The successful influencer Selma Omari, Boef’s ex, said she regretted her Nikkie purchases and even Cosmopolitan demolished Nikkie. RTL Boulevard kept Nikkie’s hand above the head. The show section refused to respond to critical questions and nothing was asked of her at the desk either.
Spinning Nikkie
Nikkie did respond to critical customers in private messages. “I refuse to give this kind of sewer press a stage. (…) I can’t deal with lies from an ‘anonymous’ source about something that one of our staff would have said 5 years ago”, she grumbled. “I can look at myself in the mirror and if I’m not something it’s a racist.”
A week later, Nikkie seemed to really care about the criticism of her ‘too white’ fashion empire, because she suddenly had a photo shoot with dark models.
Douglas under fire
People have not forgotten it, it appears now that Douglas has announced that he will sell Nikkie’s make-up. The perfume laces Instagram page is overflowing with hundreds of critical comments† “What a shame that you are going with this racist plastic garbage bag,” it sounds.
There is a lot of anger. “We don’t buy anything from such a filthy racist. Bye bye Douglas, this says enough about you. ICI Paris XL, here we come”, says one.
Aunt Lien: “DISGUSTING!! ? Why are you selling makeup from a racist who silences Black women and others who criticize her racism?”
‘What a joke!’
Noortje really thinks it’s impossible: “I’ve been a loyal customer for years. But this really makes me hesitant to boycott you guys. Nikki is a racist! Did you forget about the win action? When a lady with a headscarf won and Nikkie decided to give the prize to a white lady.”
So it goes on and on: “What a JOKE. Stop with this racist nonsense. Nobody buys that CRAP. Damn you say. From now on I will go to the ICI Paris XL!!!!!! I boycott Douglas with this one.”
The hundreds of comments on the Douglas page have not been removed at this time, but customers believe it will be soon. “Nikkie, luckily you can’t delete the comments here… Or are you already calling the Douglas intern to disable the comments under this post? “
Vera Camilla
The famous influencer Vera Camilla thinks it’s bullshit. “I am speechless, Douglas. Why do you support and sell this racist nonsense?! (…) It is slowly becoming painfully clear that the conversations Angela Onuoha has had with major stores and brands from their side were just for show. Nauseous.”
Angela Onuoha has been committed to a more inclusive foundation offer in Dutch stores for some time, together with Natacha Harlequin. She responds to the collaboration between Douglas and Nikkie as follows: “If you know… then you know why I got an instant headache right now.”
