‘Night of the Darkness’ in Diksmuide is a success
The spectacle ‘Wondernacht’ with a lot of fire caused amazement last night and thousands of people come to it. Everywhere in the city park, after darkness falls, a magical world comes to life. Fairytale figures of light, fire masters and surprising acts in the dark. This is the ‘Night of Darkness’. “We are very pleased with the turnout. Everything is also safe. Everything is monitored. We are very happy that people from Diksmuide or from outside come to discover our city,” says Lies Laridon, mayor of Diksmuide.
From now on, many ‘nights of darkness’ will follow in many West Flemish cities and municipalities, which have decided to turn off the public lighting at night as a cost-saving measure. This is not new for Diksmuide, because the street lighting has been extinguished at night for years. The city is examining whether the regime can be expanded further, which could result in additional savings of 66,000 euros or more. The darkness may pose more risks on rural roads, but for the time being this will not lead to more accidents or crime.
