Niger’s coup plotters end military pact with neighboring country Benin | Abroad

ECOWAS, the bloc of West African countries, is currently trying to negotiate with the junta, but previously warned that it is prepared to intervene militarily if those talks fail. The organization wants coup plotters to restore the government they deposed.

The junta itself said on Tuesday that Benin had authorized “the deployment of soldiers, mercenaries and war resources” in light of threats by ECOWAS, to which Benin belongs. Niger’s membership was suspended in the aftermath of the coup.

The government of Benin itself has not responded. ECOWAS has not shared details about a possible military intervention.
