Nieuwpoort opens ‘The Month of the Shrimp’

Especially for the opening of ‘The Month of the Shrimp’, the NAUTILUS is bringing in a load of fresh shrimp this morning. A few hours of fishing off the Nieuwpoort coast yielded about 60 kg. The shrimp are cooked on board and ready for consumption. Can’t get any fresher. With an average daily supply of one tonne during the catching season, Nieuwpoort is the port for daily fresh shrimp.

Ostend claims the tastiest shrimp croquette on the coast, Oostduinkerke has its unique horse fishermen. In this tourist marketing bidding, Nieuwpoort presents itself with the title of ‘the’ shrimp port of the coast.

Fall in the prizes

For spectacle you have to be in the fish market, because 35 dexterous shrimp peelers compete against each other. The winner of the first shrimp peeling competition is Erna Burkey. She peeled 218 grams of shrimp in just 45 minutes.

The title of the culinary competition Vedette Crevette is also known. That goes to Gregory Slembrouck. He has scored with his homemade shrimp-based dish.
