Jule Niemeier caused a surprise at the start of the grass tournament in Berlin and made it into the round of 16.
In a difficult duel, the Dortmund native defeated Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur from Tunisia 7: 6 (7: 4), 6: 4. After the first-round defeat in Nottingham last week, it was Niemeier’s first victory on grass this year.
Laura Siegemund had previously missed the leap into the round of 16. The 35-year-old from Metzingen lost to the Russian Anna Blinkova on Tuesday in the first round 3: 6, 7: 6 (7: 3), 5: 7.
Siegemund started the match with a 2-0 lead and had a good rhythm, but then she had to wait a long time because of the rain and then quickly gave up the lead. After a tough fight over 3:04 hours, Blinkova converted her first match point.
