Nickelback bassist Mike Kroeger prefers to leave the lyrics to his half-brother. “Today I don’t interfere anymore. I don’t have to sing that either! Sure, I could try writing lyrics for Chad — but at the end of the day, he’s the one singing them, so he should have the final say,” the 50-year-old told the online magazine in an interview “loud.de”.
“We used to be a bit more critical”
You talk about the lyrics. However, by his own admission, Mike Kroeger trusts his singer very much – although the bassist would probably write differently than Chad: “He takes risks that we probably wouldn’t take. He picks up topics we might not pick up and goes places we might not go. We used to be a bit more critical,” says the Canadian. Nickelback is considered one of the most scolded rock bands ever. Critics complain about lyrics full of platitudes and overly trivial songwriting.
No love without hate
Mike Kroeger has his own opinion on the harsh judgment of some listeners: “I think if you’re not hated, you’ve done something wrong.” If you don’t elicit an emotional reaction from people – whether positive or negative – come you don’t look at them either. Kroeger even sees his group’s recipe for success in the split echo of the public: “Our longevity is probably due to the fact that we have this ‘love it or hate it’ attitude.” In another interview with “SRF” he announced that he was safe : “A lot of haters secretly own our albums and come to our shows.”
Nickelback’s tenth studio album GET ROLLIN’ was released on November 18, 2022.
