Nick Cave sings “I Need You” for his sons

Nick Cave performed with his band The Bad Seeds at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona on June 4th and talked about his sons Luke and Earl. He dedicated the song “I Need You” from his 2016 album to them “Skeleton Tree”. The performance was said to be emotional, according to the NME – Luke and Earl are Cave’s only remaining sons; his youngest son Arthur died in 2015, his fourth son Jethro only this year.

Luke Cave, 31, plays guitar and sings for alt-rock band Carvey, while his 21-year-old half-brother Earl is an actor.

“Nothing Really Matters If The One You Love Is Gone,” Nick Cave sings on the song “I Need You.” Emotional, upsetting and full of pain – as usual for the Australian. But before Nick Cave performed the song, he addressed his audience. “I would like to dedicate this song to my two sons, Luke and Earl. They’re probably over there waiting for Bauhaus to perform,” he joked. Even after the performance there was still time for humor. “Wait… is my hair still on?” he asked, only to sing “Waiting For You” from the Ghosteen album afterwards.

His son Arthur had an accident in Brighton in 2019 at the age of 15, and Jethro Lazenby died in May of this year. The 31-year-old Australian was in prison shortly before his death. He is said to have suffered from schizophrenia. In recent years, he has wanted to help fans going through similar things and has been open about how he deals with grief. “Grief isn’t just something you go through,” he explained. Together with his wife, grief has become part of life. “We have learned to surrender to the uncertainty of the world,” writes the musician. They realized how fragile life is and that brought them back into the world. There was hardly any breaks for Nick Cave, he is currently on a world tour. He also stops in Germany.
