NHL record player Patrick Marleau is retiring from ice hockey after 23 seasons. The 42-year-old, who replaced NHL legend Gordie Howe in 2021 and played a total of 1,779 games, announced his retirement on Tuesday.
“If you told that kid on the frozen pond that one day he would break Gordie Howe’s record, he would have thought you were crazy,” Marleau said.
The forward played for the San Jose Sharks for 19 years before moving to the Toronto Maple Leafs for two years. Marleau returned to California, then was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 2020/21 he played again in San Jose, in the past season Marleau took a break.
