Next record: Shiffrin draws level with Marcel Hirscher

Status: 03/19/2023 12:43 p.m

Mikaela Shiffrin collected the next records at the end of the season and drew level with Marcel Hirscher, among others, in the last giant slalom.

Alpine Queen Mikaela Shiffrin said goodbye to the deserved break in top form and still aggressive. The world champion confidently left her competitors behind at the World Cup finals in Soldeu and once again improved her impressive record in the final giant slalom.

For the 28-year-old it was the 88th success since her World Cup debut 12 years ago. With the 138th place on the podium, Shiffrin also drew level with Austria’s ex-ski star Marcel Hirscher on Sunday (19.3.23). And surpassed Vreni Schneider (20) with the 21st victory in a giant slalom. Shiffrin had already cleared the big crystal ball for the overall and the small one for the giant slalom and slalom World Cup.

Shiffrin continues to perform in the extra class

With start number one, the American had presented the competition with a best time that could not be beaten. Shiffrin confidently made the decision ahead of Canada’s Valerie Grenier and Italy’s Marta Bassino.

In the final, the Norwegian Thea Louise Stjernesund made it onto the podium ahead of Grenier. Victory, albeit narrow, went to Mikaela Shiffrin by a margin of six hundredths.

Worley says goodbye to the World Cup circus

For Tessa Worley from France, on the other hand, it was the last fight for a podium place. The 33-year-old says goodbye to the Alpine stage with 11th place. In giant slalom she won the world title in 2013 and 17. 16 victories and two small crystal balls are in the World Cup. For teammate Coralie Frasse Sombet, 16th place was also the end of her career.

Vlhova and Brignone out early

Like Italy’s Federica Brignone, Petra Vlhova, winner of the slalom on Saturday, was out of the race early due to the difficult snow conditions. With that, they also said goodbye to the battle for second place in the overall standings. Lara Gut-Behrami, who only just missed out on the podium in fourth place, secured that ahead of Marta Bassino.

No DSV representative among the top 25 of the season

A German driver was not at the start of the giant slalom final. Since the retirement of Viktoria Rebensburg in 2020, Germany has practically disappeared from the map in the alpine basic discipline. “We don’t even create athletes who compete in the extended world elite“, says alpine director Wolfgang Maier.

Sports show expert Felix Neureuther summarizes the winter after a long season. He hopes there will be less fighting in the future.
