In 2007, the American company Odyssey Marine Exploration found, on the shores of the Gulf of Cadiz, remains of Our Lady of Mercedes, a frigate belonging to the Spanish Navy, sunk by the English in 1804. contained about 590,000 gold and silver coins, from the time of Carlos IV, minted in Peru, for which it has become, up to now, the greatest underwater treasure in history. Later, a legal dispute began between Spain and the company, which lasted for five years until, finally, the rights were granted to the Iberian country.
That is the starting point of the story that the award-winning Hispanic director Alejandro Amenabar (“Open your eyes”, “The sea inside”, “The others”) counts in his first series, which he co-wrote with Alexander Hernandez. Originally, it premiered on Movistar+ and is inspired by the graphic novel “black swan treasure” from Paco Roca and Guillermo Corral which, in turn, is based on the real facts described above. In this recreation, the ship is called “The Fortune”.
Throughout its six episodes, we meet Álex Ventura (Alvaro Mel), a young diplomat who unintentionally finds himself involved in a mission that will test all his convictions: recover the submerged riches stolen by Frank Wild (Stanley Tucci), an adventurer who travels the world plundering the common heritage of the deep sea.
Forming a team with Lucía (Anne Dusty), an official of the Ministry of Culture, of arms to take, and Jonas Pierce (Clarke Peters), an American lawyer passionate about old pirate stories, Álex will embark on the adventure of his life, while discovering things about himself in addition to friendship, love or commitment to what he believes in. Well-known faces from the big screen and North American and peninsular fiction complete its cast as
T’Nia Miller, Karra Elejalde, Manolo Solo and Blanca Portillo, among others.
Last Sunday, January 16, AMC broadcast its first episode, with several repetitions weekly.
