News | the cuphead show

★★★★ Based on a video game, this series created by Dave Wasson (a longtime animator who worked, with honors, on Ralph Bakshi’s Super Mouse and Paul Rudish’s excellent Mickey Mouse, as well as creating Star vs. the forces of evil) takes the 1930s style of animation created by the Fleischer brothers (dancing things, surreal metamorphoses, dry and absurd violence) to the present. The result is beautiful and bright graphically and has very notable and well-executed moments of humor. It also has a small problem: everything looks too shiny and, at times, too fast (although yes, that has a lot of the stylistic memory of the first American cartoon). The stories aren’t really as “childish” as one might think, but neither do they reach the outrageous level of Ren and Stimpy (another series that deconstructed the classic cartoon). It’s a lot of fun and it’s attractive to watch, not a little for an industrial production.
