★★★ A few years ago, Chris McKay (with Christopher Miller and Peter Lord behind, it must be said) built the best adaptation of Batman to the cinema: “Lego Batman”. It’s not exaggerated, because he brought together all the mythology and themes in a playful and comical way. It is still a gem. In Renfield, no longer in the animated field, McKay attempts the same with the Dracula myth through his assistant for centuries, the here young Renfield. And yes, there is terror and gore everywhere, but with a pop sensibility that makes any unsettling elements dissolve into the personal conflict of his creatures. However, the idea of touching absolutely all the iconography that worked in that Batman (based on a toy and a comic) here slips due to the need to narrate a story that requires other dimensions, another depth of characters. He entertains and works from time to time.
