Dra, how were the beginnings of Nutrition in Diabetes?
When I was 9 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. From that moment I knew that my desire was to be able to help people with the same pathology, both theoretically and from my experience.
While I was studying, I was part of an NGO in Mar del Plata, where I met many people who were going through the same thing as me and where I learned a lot. Then, in December 2017, I finished my Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and little by little I began to attend face-to-face clinics in my city. With the arrival of the pandemic, “Nutrition in Diabetes” was born online, which opened the doors for me to help people not only from Mar del Plata but also from the rest of the country. “Nutrition in Diabetes” as a team emerged from August 2021, where a Nutritionist and then two Psychologists joined.
What services do you provide?
What we offer are virtual consultations that last approximately 45 minutes to an hour. We have two free recipe books that I made together with Abbott and also workshops throughout the year with different themes, for example: “Special carbohydrate counting for parties”, or “Diabetes at school”, aimed at parents of children with Diabetes as well as to directors and teachers of the schools where a child with this pathology attends, so that they are informed about what Diabetes is and how to act in different situations that may arise; and many more workshops.
What are the challenges ahead?
Our goal is to be able to help more and more people who live with Diabetes to make their days easier and to be able to explain what to eat, without prohibiting, breaking with the still existing myths about this pathology, since we consider that Diabetes education is the way to achieve a good quality of life.
