★★★1/2 A jewelry store owner tries to flee the Nazi invasion of France and leaves his business to his employee. He fails to escape and hides in the basement of his premises, living with his employee and his wife. The film is dense, especially sustained in the performances (intense as befits the theme and form) and exceeds the context to present a complete moral fable that does not lack suspense.
