Adrián Mercado is the president of the company that bears his name and that has been a leader in the auction market for 35 years. “In the auction division we are dedicated to the sale of multinational companies, SMEs, either due to renewal or cessation of activities, having extensive knowledge of the sale of industrial machinery, vehicles, road machinery, among others. We also have the real estate sector, covering the commercialization of the sale of sheds, lots and warehouses in industrial parks, premises, offices, residences, etc”, says Walter Sosa, Collegiate Public Auctioneer No. 2756 and Sales Advisor of Grupo Adrián Mercado SA , Auctions division.
Undoubtedly, the COVID-19 pandemic radically changed consumer habits and this was also directly reflected in the way in which auctions began to develop, noting a notable growth in online auctions, which allowed accommodate quickly and grew exponentially.
Since March 2020, Adrián Mercado has registered an increase of between 80 to 90 percent in online auctions. Before the pandemic, three dates per month were held with this sales methodology, with several companies at the same time. After the pandemic, between three and four dates per week began to be held and even segmentation had to be reached each day by item. All this increase was accompanied by a change in the number of lots to be auctioned off. The minimum is approximately between 2,000 and 2,500 batches per month, which makes a total of 30,000 batches per year, and it is increasing.
How was the instrumentation of this deepening in online auctions?
At the beginning of the pandemic we had to adapt to something new for us, although we had already been holding auctions online and in person. In 80% of the cases the auctions were held live in each factory where the merchandise was. This meant that we had to shuffle and deal again, and implement a system that, until then, was a novelty, even for our competition. Ours are online auctions with a built-in auctioneer, where Adrián Mercado himself, with 40 years of experience in the field, is in charge of auctioning the same as me. This meant that they did not miss out on that back and forth with the buyers, although we do not have the possibility to see them (and they do to us), they chat live with us and this keeps the auctions dynamic.
In what way did this new modality benefit you, which has already become the main one?
Many people who were not used to participating turned out, and that increased the number of potential buyers at each auction. This is one of the most notable changes that the pandemic left in the sector. It is a path of no return with many positive aspects such as the increase in the number of lots to be auctioned, the increase in the number of participating public, without border limits, and the possibility of experiencing an event of these characteristics from anywhere.
What are the items that have grown the most?
Taking into account the current context that the online auction market is going through, there are many items that are very active and with excellent results. But, it is obvious, there are some that stand out especially and are the ones that attract the greatest amount of public, such as vehicles, trucks and road machines. In the case of automobiles, there is a great variety of proposals, both by companies that renew their fleet and the auctions carried out by the same automakers of disused units, as well as auctions by insurance companies, among others. Another item that generates great interest is office furniture, a market that has intensified significantly since the pandemic with the imposition of the home office. Many companies disarmed their spaces. Finally, oil materials, mining machinery, antiques, construction and railway elements, laboratory and food machinery, among others. In 2021, the greatest growth was seen in the metallurgical industry, soil movement, and service and textile companies.
What expectations do you have for next year?
We want to continue providing the best service. We know that there are always things to improve, but the great advantage is that we have a great human work group, where we all push forward, I think that is what distinguishes us and gives us the best impetus for the coming years.
