★★★★ Destroyed by critics, condemned to be distributed almost exclusively via Prime Video, this film by George Miller is a fantastic tale that narrates the meeting between a genius (actually a djinn) and an academic, plus several stories that revolve around of the misfortunes of the former in the search for his freedom, and how, through time, ambition and desire cause misfortunes. But that matters less than the intelligent deployment of the fantastic as a way to tell a story and communicate ideas. Miller, a doctor in addition, has always known how to combine the rational with the irrational in a game of Chinese boxes -this film is nothing else- fictional, always made with and for pleasure. Which here lies in seeing Swinton and Elba perform together, two extraordinary comedians who know all the nuances of their trade.
