Newborn abandoned in Osilo, mother arrested

SAccording to the first investigations by the Carabinieri, the woman she would give birth at dawn in his room. In the house in Osilo, in the province of Sassari, in northern Sardinia, where she lives with her parents and grandparents. After giving birth, the 29-year-old cut the umbilical cord herself. She then she would go out into the street and apparently decided to leave the baby with the umbilical cord still attached under a parked car. There he was found by a passerby with obvious signs of hypothermia. Thus began the life of newborn abandoned in Osilo this morning.

Work and motherhood: Italy is not yet a country for mothers

The mother of the newborn abandoned on the street in Osilo arrested

His mother was arrested for attempted murder. She was hospitalized in the gynecology department of the Sassari hospital, guarded by the police, and it seems she was reported by her mother, the grandmother of her baby.

The newborn is instead hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care and Maternal and Infant Neonatology department of the AOU of Sassari. The doctors named him Francescoas the head of the department, doctor, told the Unione Sarda Maria Antonia Cossu.

Abandoned newborns, from Taranto to Trapani

Just two months ago there was a case of an abandoned newborn in Taranto: a 23-year-old Georgian had left his son near a rubbish bin. Even in that case, as in Osilo, the little boy had been found by a passerby who was walking her dog. The 23-year-old then expressed her desire to recognize the child, who they named Lorenzo in the hospital.

Another recent case is that of a newborn found in a plastic bag in the fields of Paceco, in the province of Trapani, found by a farmer who had heard his crying. A boy and a minor girl were then arrested on charges of attempted attempted murder: they apparently decided together to get rid of the newborn.

The alternatives for desperate mothers: giving birth anonymously in hospital

We don’t know the story of the mother of the newborn abandoned in Osilo. But we imagine her filled with desperation and little awareness of the value of her life. But also of ignorance of what the law provides for women who do not want to raise or recognize their children. In Italy there are two possibilities, evidently very little known, with which a mother can give up being one without condemning her child to almost certain death.

The first is Birth anonymously in hospital. Mother gives birth to her baby without having to register your identity maximum health and legal protection. The law allows it (Presidential Decree 396/2000, art. 30, paragraph 2). In this case, the mother’s name remains forever secret and in the birth certificate of the child it is written “born of a woman who does not consent to be named”. The immediate reporting to the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Juvenile Court of the situation of abandonment of the unrecognized newborn, allows the opening of an adoptability procedure and the identification, in a very short time, of a suitable couple.

According to law 149 of 2001, the adopted person can have access to the identity of the biological parents only if it was recognized at birth, not when an anonymous birth was requested.

The cradle for life (but there are none in Sardinia)

The other possibility, in Italy, is to place the child in one of the (few) Cradles for Life. Here is the search engine to find the closest one. SThere are only about sixty of them, distributed unevenly across the territory. There are none in Sardinia, but not even in Basilicata, Molise, Sardinia and Friuli Venezia Giulia.
