New Zealand opens borders to tourists early | Abroad

New Zealand will gradually open its borders to tourists from April 12. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced this on Wednesday. Australian tourists are the first to be admitted.

Then it is the turn of travelers from countries that are on the so-called ‘visa waiver’ list, including the Netherlands. Tourists from the rest of the world will probably have to wait until October.

“We are ready to safely start a new chapter,” Ardern said. “Closing our borders was one of the first measures we took two years ago to stop Covid-19. It did what it was supposed to do. But now that we are highly vaccinated and predicted to have left the omikrona peak behind us, it is safe to open (our country).”

Visitors must be vaccinated. They must also show a negative test result. They do not have to isolate themselves on arrival, but they do have to undergo two more corona tests during their stay in New Zealand.

New Zealand has been keeping its borders closed to almost all visitors since March 2020.
