New Zealand is deprived of sleep at night by Céline Dion

Although Céline Dion’s ballads have always been quite popular with most of the population, this has changed for many Porirua residents in recent months.

For some time now, fans of the singer in Porirua have made it their mission at night to spread her music further and, above all, louder. They hold nightly meetings in their cars and play Dion’s music over their speakers.

Unfortunately, this caused less enthusiasm and more complaints from residents because they felt their sleep was being disturbed. Mayor Anita Baker supports the affected residents and explains that they cannot take it any longer and that she would therefore start a petition. This calls on the government of the small town to take appropriate measures that would lead to a solution to their problem.

Siren battles instead of sleep

This type of nighttime activity, in which drivers engage in volume competitions with their loudspeakers, is already known as “siren battles” in New Zealand. The approximately 60,000 residents often have to endure the sound from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Anita Baker told the AFP news agency that she is working with the local police to find solutions to solve the problem and ensure that residents can soon sleep undisturbed again. She also explained that she was worried about people leaving the city because of the noise at night: “We don’t want people to leave the city because of the noise. This is unacceptable”.
