New York City fires 1,430 workers who refuse vaccination | Abroad

The City of New York has fired 1,430 city workers for failing to comply with vaccination obligations. American media report that. It is less than 1 percent of the total number of employees employed by the city, but would be the largest collective layoff as a result of the corona measures in the US.

Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday that 1,428 people who have been on unpaid leave for months have been fired for failing to receive their first dose of a vaccine. Two newer staff members subject to stricter rules were fired for failing to receive a second dose, it said The New York Times† Nearly 4,000 people had until Friday to comply with the vaccination obligation.

Adams also said he was pleased that the vast majority of the 370,000 employees were vaccinated by the deadline. About 95 percent already received at least one dose of a vaccine, when the vaccination obligation was announced in October, that was still 84 percent. “Our goal has always been to vaccinate more people, not lay off people,” he said.

About 900 redundant workers worked in the education department, 100 in the housing service and 36 in the police. Another 9,000 workers are also unvaccinated, but they have applied for an exemption or are working with unions to prevent layoffs.

Anyone who works for the City of New York must have received at least one dose of the vaccine. New hires must also have a second dose. A booster shot isn’t necessary, but Adams says he’s considering that idea, too.

Opponents of the vaccination obligation have made several attempts to challenge the obligation in court, but have been unsuccessful. On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by a group of employees of the education department.
