New Year’s reception and homage to deceased butcher Rik Van Hoecke in Oostveld
Like many other municipalities, Beernem also organized the traditional New Year’s reception on the first Sunday after New Year. The reception took place in Oostveld, a hamlet of the borough of Oedelem, which has about a thousand inhabitants.
The inhabitants ring in the New Year, but also find support in each other after the tragic hunting accident on New Year’s Day in which the butcher of the village, Rik Van Hoecke, lost his life.
