New street lighting in Waregem

The city of Waregem and the Belgian grid operator of electricity and natural gas, Fluvius, have decided to also install the street lighting in Waregem after 11 pm during the week.

Savings

From October 10, 2022, Waregem, like many other cities, decided to switch off street lighting between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m., except on Friday and Saturday. This decision was made because the city wanted to reduce energy costs during the energy crisis. Fluvius modified a total of 296 electricity cables.

Streets lit up again

Many residents reported to the city that they felt unsafe on the streets at night. That is why the city council decides to install the lighting again. Energy prices are currently falling again. The police of the city of Waregem reports that turning off the lighting has not led to more incidents. Yet many residents feel less safe without street lighting.

Fluvius

It is not easy to re-install the street lighting all night. The city council and Fluvius want to re-install the street lighting by the end of August, but this will be done in phases. By mid-September, all lights should be back on during the night. In addition, the city is working with Fluvius to replace the current street lighting with energy-efficient and environmentally friendly LED lighting.
