As Sony’s patent titled “Tracking Unique In-Game Digital Assets Using Tokens on a Distributed Ledger” reveals, Sony has arguably discovered blockchain technology and NFTs for itself.

The patent application describes a system that uses blockchain technology to track the history of a unique in-game item, including details of who created the item, who owned it in the past, and whether it has been altered over time , reports GameSpot.

It goes on to say that individuals often find it useful “to possess or use unique physical objects associated with notable figures or activities. In traditional video games, there are multiple instances of the same game item in the same copy of the video game and/or in different ones Copies of the video game. These different copies of the same game item are traditionally fungible as they are indistinguishable from each other,” Crypto News Flash quoted Sony as saying.

Fans may be able to collect in-game items from esports players and influencers

The patent filing suggests fans may want to collect in-game items owned or created by well-known esports players or gaming influencers. For example, the tracked data could show whether an item was used by a player to win a major gaming tournament. The patent filing also mentions the transfer of items between games and even between platforms, GameSpot writes. “The techniques and technologies described herein enhance the functionality of digital items associated with video games and systems that create and manage such digital items by tracking a history of the digital items,” the description concludes.

Integrating NFTs could fuel Sony’s growth

The project is still in its infancy and nothing is certain. But the advances in the gaming industry regarding the Metaverse show that Sony doesn’t want to miss this train either. Meta is leading the way and has already experimented with NFTs on its platforms. Sony is also well on its way to catching on to the trend, with its PlayStation Stars loyalty program already introducing digital collectibles, according to Crypto News. Time will tell if the effort is worth it and with that in mind, a future collaboration between Sony and Ethereum, the largest blockchain hosting NFTs, emerges.
