Gorillaz have released a new song. The brand new work “The God of Lying”, which features IDLES, is the third single from the band’s upcoming studio album and was released on November 7th.

The song was written by singer Damon Albarn and Joe Talbot and recorded in London, Devon and Mumbai. With Ajay Prasanna on bansuri and Viraj Acharya on percussion, the piece is about social and political unrest – just like the upcoming album “The Mountain”, which will be released on March 20, 2026. Regarding the theme, frontman 2D is convinced: “Can I tell you a secret? Doubt is very tiring, but questioning things is really good for you.”

The band’s ninth record includes 15 songs recorded between Devon and London, India, Ashgabat and Damascus, Los Angeles, Miami and New York.

Spiritual music and instrumental sounds

According to the company’s own statements, the work offers “an expansive soundscape full of instruments and sounds, richly layered with voices, melodies and catchy beats”. Numerous collaborators can be heard, including Anoushka Shankar, Johnny Marr, Sparks, Trueno and Yasmin Bey. Voices of deceased friends of the band such as Dennis Hopper and Tony Allen also found their way onto the album.

Inspired by their ongoing stay in India, the band turned to spiritual music. Gorillaz drummer Russel Hobbs explains: “As stardust, we are here forever – and that’s a hell of a long time. This is a musical meditation, infused with light. A journey of the soul, with beats…”
