Pink Floyd released Hey Hey, Rise Up! on Thursday (April 7), their first single in 28 years, their first new material since 1994’s Division Bell album (the 2014 effort The Endless River ‘ consists of previous session outtakes).

The two still active or living Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Nick Mason (Roger Waters got out in 1985, Rick Wright died in 2008) donate proceeds from the song go to a Ukraine relief fund. Gilmour does not sing, and Andriy Khlyvnyuk, frontman of the Ukrainian rock band BoomBox, will do the vocals. He overlays the melody of the Ukrainian protest song “Oi u luzi chervona kalyna” over the Gilmour/Mason instrumental track.

The single cover shows a kind of “sunflower with an eye”, the band’s lettering is immersed in the Ukrainian national colors of blue and yellow.

Gilmour and Khlyvnyuk have been friends since performing together. The session was created via Facetime – because Khlyvnyuk is in the hospital, he was injured by a grenade. The video shows the band recording the piece, with footage from the Ukraine war in between.
