Actually, many had expected to enjoy a new Depeche Mode single on February 3, 2023. But fans of Dave Gahan and Martin Gore still need a little patience: “Ghosts Again” — the first single from the upcoming Depeche Mode album “Memento Mori” — will be released on February 9, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. German time, like the band announced on their social media channels. At least: The synth-pop legends already give us a small excerpt of the song (which could already be heard in the countdown) as well as an artwork that could be the album cover.
The countdown to the countdown
The band had already posted a countdown the previous week, which initially pointed to February 3, 2023. “Time is fleeting, see what it brings” was the title of the band – but as it turned out, it was just a countdown to the countdown.
About Memento Mori
“Memento Mori” will be released on March 17, 2023. It is the band’s first album since the death of founding member Andy Fletcher. Fletcher died unexpectedly on May 26, 2022 from an aortic dissection. Depeche Mode announced “Memento Mori” in early October 2023. According to the band, the Latin title (“Recognize Your Mortality”) was already in place before Fletcher’s death. “The title sounds very morbid, but you can also see it in a very positive light. Live the day to the fullest, that’s how we interpret it,” says Martin Gore.
It has been speculated for some time that “Ghosts Again” will be the first single release. This was cheered on by British DJ duo CamelPhat, who said they were working on a remix of the new single. In addition, the musicians had already played an excerpt from a remix in a live set. It was a piece that Dave Gahan and Martin Gore had already presented a small excerpt of at their press conference on October 14, 2022 in Berlin.
