In July 2021, Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters launched her new Road Safety Plan 2021-2025. One of the overarching objectives for achieving a safe traffic system is a strong enforcement chain.

Flemish minister Lydia Peeters: “The effect of section checks on road safety has been proven. At section controls, the number of speeding violations decreases by about 78%. Research shows that the number of crashes near a section control drops by 15 to even 30 percent. Especially in the area of serious accidents, we notice this effect with a decrease of more than 50%.”

“19 of the 52 current section checks are working”

In West Flanders, only 19 of the 52 current route checks are active. Governor Carl Decaluwé said this this afternoon at the provincial council.

He calls for them to be put into effect as soon as possible, including on regional roads. In the first quarter of the year, 99 percent of fatal accidents on our state roads were clearly related to speed, the governor said.
