New recreational domain in the making in Ledegem

The Ledegemse Meersen are low-lying, wet meadows on the Heulebeek. These are now being transformed into a buffer in which the water of the Heulebeek will run more quickly. “It will ensure that Ledegem floods less quickly and that the surrounding agricultural land is less likely to flood or become water sick,” explains Bart Naeyaert, deputy for water policy.

The lakes are also located right next to the popular Kezelberg cycle route, on the old railway line Menen-Roeselare. This offers opportunities for the development of a new nature reserve with 2.5 kilometers of hiking trails. “Recreation, water management and a dog walking area are combined here with the functions that are already there, the agriculture in the area. Everything is nicely put together here,” says Ledegems mayor Bart Dochy.

The new provincial domain must be ready by the autumn of next year.
