New quay wall should better protect Blankenberge against storms

Work started in September 2020. A final section of the storm wall was built on the Barcadere and seven mobile barriers were built to close the openings in the existing wall in the event of a storm. New quay walls were also built. The mobile barriers can be closed during storm surges to prevent water from entering the center of Blankenberge.

“The climate challenges force us to take numerous measures. We have to make Flanders a resilient wetland. In the context of the coastal safety master plan, we are looking for solutions to better protect the coastline,” says Minister Peeters. Work is also planned in Blankenberge in the coming months. For example, the Agency for Maritime Services and Coast will start the second phase for a new quay wall in September.

A storm wall will be built on the seawall in October so that there is better protection during storm surges. The end of the works is planned for April 2023. In addition, the construction of the new breakwater to prevent silting of the harbor channel will start at the earliest in October 2023.
