New professorship for industrial automation systems

For ten years, Dr. Departed in the field of automation technology in the field of study “Electrical Engineering and Mechatronics” at the Private University for Economics and Technology gGmbH (PHWT) in Diepholz. There, as a professor, Wich was involved not only with teaching, but also with the development and development of laboratories and new courses. He has continuously expanded his knowledge of automation technology and systems from the related technology areas of sensors, robotics and image processing as well as embedded systems and the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 applications.

His enthusiasm for the field began with his studies in mechanical engineering / precision engineering at the Technical University of Ilmenau and right there with an additional degree in mechatronics and management as well as an integrated study abroad in the field of mechanical engineering at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. Back at the TU Ilmenau, he devoted himself again to studying mechanical engineering with a focus on microsystems technology and completed his mechanical engineering / precision engineering studies with a diploma.

Wich gained his first professional experience as an engineer at a well-known southern German automobile manufacturer, where he worked in the research field of fuel cell technology. Subsequently, from 2004, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Oldenburg in microrobotics and control engineering in the Department of Computer Science. In 2006, he took on the task of acquiring third-party funds as well as the personnel and content-related coordination of R&D projects as a project manager in an affiliated institute of the University of Oldenburg that deals with knowledge transfer. In 2008, Wich received his doctorate (Dr.-Ing. in the field of assembling micro and nano components on the topic “Tools and methods for automating nano assembly in the scanning electron microscope”.

Just two years later, Dr. Wich was appointed professor at the private university for business and technology in Diepholz and has been involved in teaching and research in his favorite field ever since. In order not to lose his feel for future-oriented fields of technology and corresponding innovations and to keep his finger on the pulse of the times, he runs a freelance engineering office that offers consulting and development in the areas of automation technology, digitization of industrial processes, industry 4.0; offers sensors and measurement technology.

In the course of a professional reorientation, Dr.-Ing. Thomas Wich new professor since the beginning of the winter semester 21/22 Department of Electrical Engineering / Computer Science at the Technical University of Lübeck. The professor for industrial automation systems says about his tasks at the TH Lübeck: “I work on the application-driven digitization and automation of processes in the trade, in production but also in the daily environment. This happens at the interface between robotics, automation technology and computer science. The linking of these subject areas opens up countless new application possibilities – but also new questions in the social, ecological and economic areas.” Thomas Wich continues: “I would like to put our students in a position to tackle these complex challenges, to develop new concepts and to implement solutions . For this purpose, I will provide you with solid technical basic and methodological knowledge in order to be fit for the rapidly changing environment in the future.”
