New prince couple takes over carnival baton in Emmen: ‘Waited for all year’

The eleventh of the eleventh. In the diaries of revelers, the day is circled in red, because the carnival season starts then. A new Prince and Princess will be crowned at carnival in various places in Drenthe, including at the carnival association De Zeskante Steen in the Barger-Oosterveld district in Emmen.

The eyes are still a bit small, but the smile is still clearly visible on the face. Rick Karsterberg and Cheryl Sulmann are the new prince couple during carnival. Last night they were crowned at a party at the SVBO football club. “We had some jokes prepared,” Karsterberg. “Then we came on stage with our own song. That was quite spectacular.”

“We’ve been waiting for this all year,” Sulmann adds. The new prince is always chosen by the former prince, then he chooses a princess. “I previously indicated that I wanted to become one. The fact that it finally worked out makes it very nice.”

The coronation naturally brings responsibilities, but fortunately the new couple receives tips from their predecessors. “Make sure you try to get some sleep here and there. Such a carnival week is extremely intensive,” says former princess Maaike Siekman. “For the rest, enjoy it as much as possible. The crowds, the people, it’s really fun.”

“On Carnival Sunday there is a parade where about 40,000 people come to watch you. Then you get goosebumps,” adds former Prince Antoine Boxem. “You have to enjoy it to the fullest. And of course we are willing to give them tips if they would like.” He and Siekman were allowed to form a princely couple for two years. Due to corona, they were unable to run a full carnival week the first time.
