New President Bernstein on first impressions and official actions

By Roberto Lamprecht and Paul Gorgas

After his election as Hertha President, Kay Bernstein (41) answered questions about…

.. the duel with Frank Steffel: “I had expected a close result. I was surprised that there was a difference of 390 votes. The decisive factor was that I am a Herthaner. I picked up the people with the Hertha DNA.”

… his first official act: “Wednesday’s board meeting. The main task will be to turn the presidency into a tight-knit bunch with a lot of team spirit that sets Hertha as an example.”

… the importance of being the first president to emerge from the ultra scene: “It’s a heavy burden to be the first to walk this path that sprang from the Ultra generation. For me, the Herthaner is above it. You are first the Herthaner, then the fan, the habit, the ultra, the grandstand seater.”

… his feelings: “It’s still surreal, it hasn’t arrived yet. You can feel the rucksack of responsibility. Now you can go and have a beer with the temperatures.”

… about conversations with Bobic and Windhorst: “I had a brief exchange with Fredi earlier. There is no appointment with Mr. Windhorst yet. I’m not going it alone. We first sit down with the presidency and coordinate it.”
