New peak of high water threatens: 200 extra large sandbags for Visserseiland in Hoorn

After a restless evening, during which the water quickly came towards the houses, peace has returned to Visserseiland in Hoorn. But the worries are not over yet, because the real peak of the high water is only expected on Friday or Saturday. So extra sandbags have already been placed by the municipality and more are being added.

Yesterday evening the neighborhood was surprised because the water suddenly rose again. Local residents therefore jointly place extra sandbags. But the water ultimately did not reach the houses.

200 extra big bags with sand

It may still happen on Friday or Saturday. The wind then turns to the east and/or northeast. Because the water from the Markermeer cannot be drained to the IJsselmeer, a high water level is expected. “As a precaution, we are therefore placing approximately 200 big bags of sand. They will be placed against the sidewalk in the Visserseiland street as an additional buffer against any new high water,” the municipality said.

But not everyone seems to be really worried. “You know that everything is being done, so you just hope that everything goes well,” says a local resident.

‘Measures are exaggerated’

A man who comes to have a look thinks all the measures are exaggerated. “It used to be worse. That was a spectacle, as a child you would go through it on your bike. But it probably doesn’t end up in the houses.”

Meanwhile, a girl wearing boots eagerly takes advantage of walking through the water in the street. “I like it. I like jumping and stomping in puddles.” However, the municipality advises against playing in it or letting pets enter the water because the water may be contaminated.

Kitesurfing at Schellinkhout

A little further on in Schellinkhout, the Schelpenstrandje is also still under water. It does not stop the kite surfers from taking to the water while the wind is still doing its job.
