New option for Jérôme Boateng

FC Bayern has decided – accompanied by a lot of noise – against re-signing the out-of-contract Jérôme Boateng. Now there is apparently another option for the central defender.

According to Sky, Jérôme Boateng could play in the Greek Super League in the future. According to the broadcaster, several clubs from the local league are showing interest in the central defender. It is not known which clubs these are specifically.

The only thing that is clear for now is that Boateng will not be in the German upper house again. FC Bayern had not offered its “deserving” former player an employment contract, as the club announced through the club media last Friday.

Not only sporting aspects were taken into account when making the decision. The German record champions’ plans to bring Boateng back had previously caused a lot of criticism in the active fan scene.

The Berlin native is facing a new criminal trial in Bavaria because he is accused of attacking his then partner and mother of his children while on vacation in the summer of 2018. Last year, the 35-year-old was sentenced to a fine of 1.2 million euros until the verdict was overturned by the Bavarian Higher Regional Court.

Bayern sports director: Boateng “a bit disappointed”

Despite the turmoil surrounding the Boateng case, FC Bayern has now offered the central defender to continue training at Säbener Straße. On Monday he took part in a session with the second team.

Meanwhile, FCB sporting director Christoph Freund explained that Boateng was “of course a bit disappointed” about the Bayern bosses’ decision and emphasized: “He was fit and presented himself well.”

Boateng was under contract with French club Olympique Lyon until the end of June. Since then he has been without a club.
