The members of the new municipal councils will be installed on Wednesday for the period 2022-2026.
During the first council meeting, the appointed members, who were elected during the municipal elections two weeks ago, take the oath or affirmation.
No overlap
With effect from March 30, the old city council also resigned immediately. There can be no overlap between municipal councils, according to the Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG). “The municipal council is the highest body in the municipality, which can, for example, set binding rules for citizens (ordinances) and can withdraw confidence in mayors. Even for this reason, it is impossible that two municipal councils would be in office at any time.”
Urgently
In the unlikely event that the council is required to act after midnight Wednesday, the new council will be convened as a matter of urgency. “In that case, the installation will first have to take place, after which decisions can be made about urgent matters,” says VNG.
