The next generational duel will take place in the Darts Premier League on Thursday when 53-year-old Peter Wright meets 17-year-old Luke Littler. The teenager goes into the match as the favorite, but the old warhorse has already come up with a trick to throw the youngster off his stride.
He’s a bit annoyed with Luke Litter, Peter Wright said with a wink in an interview just a few days ago. The fact that the 17-year-old doesn’t exude any tension before his matches and instead simply plays with his cell phone in the warm-up room while the other players work on the board frustrates him, said “Snakebite” with a smile.
The Scot has therefore come up with a simple solution for the direct clash on Thursday evening in Newcastle. “I’ll just take his phone away from him in the warm-up room so that he can’t play any more games on it. That will upset him,” Wright said in an interview with the Sportsboom portal.
Wright draws inspiration from Littler
Like his previous criticism, Wright’s plan is of course not entirely serious. In fact, the 53-year-old actually bows down to what Littler has achieved in such a short time. What’s more, in a way he sees the teenager as a role model.
“He inspired me with what he did for the sport,” enthused the Scot. Littler is “fantastic” for the darts scene and its young talent. The young Englishman showed “that you don’t have to be a 50-year-old with a lot of experience to become world champion,” emphasized “Snakebite”.
For the 53-year-old former world champion and also for Littler, Thursday’s game is synonymous with a premiere, as the two have not yet faced each other on stage.
