All players rerated
All players in the Mexican Liga MX received a new market value after the end of the season and with a view to the World Cup in Qatar. Thanks to upgrades, the two Uruguayans Fernando Gorriarán (27, Santos Laguna) and Leonardo Fernández (23, Toluca) are closing in on the most valuable player in the league: Florian Thauvin (29, Tigres). The latter defended its record value of 10 million euros.
Fernández leads Deportivo Toluca’s upward trend
Toluca upset the Liguilla Apertura (championship round) as the team from the city of 2.6 million knocked out favorites CF América in the semifinals. Coach Ignacio Ambriz gets the best out of his players and one of them is midfielder Fernández who gets an upgrade from €7m to €8m. A total of eight Toluca professionals have earned a plus – for the club it’s a total of 4.3 million euros up ten percent.
Santos Laguna, who lost to Toluca in the quarter-finals, saw Gorriarán stand out, going from €8m to €9m. The contract of the Uruguayan midfielder, who came from Ferencváros from Hungary in 2019 for EUR 2.5m, is dated until 2026 – at the World Cup in Qatar he can further improve his market value. At Santos, the eight upgrades and seven devaluations are almost balanced this time and the bottom line is that the squad value has increased by 2.3 million euros.
Market values Mexico: The most valuable players of Liga MX
Other participants in the Liguilla who have also increased in market value are Henry Martín from América (+1.5 to €6m), Javier López from Pachuca (+1 to 3.5) and Arturo Gonzalez from Monterrey (+0, 5 to 6). Master Pachuca’s top players such as Érick Sánchez (€8m), Nicolás Ibáñez (€7.5m) and Luis Chávez (+0.5 to 6.5) were able to confirm their market value or scored a small plus.
Eight CF Monterrey players demoted
On the other hand, there are many devaluations for the two teams from Nuevo Leon State: Tigres UANL and CF Monterrey. The “Rayados” from Monterrey have eight devaluations, which result in a minus of €4.2m in Mexico’s most valuable squad – the largest for Argentinian winger Maximiliano Meza, who was brought in from Independiente for €13m in 2019 and now falling from 9M to 8M. Despite reaching the semi-finals, some players fell short of expectations.
The Tigres are not going down that much, but there are also well-known players whose market value was reduced: Guido Pizarro (-0.2 to 3), Diego Reyes (-0.5 to 2) , Luis Quiñones (-0.5 to 2.5) and Javier Aquino (-0.2 to 2.3). Meanwhile, a primarily age-related drop goes to veterans such as America’s 37-year-old goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa (-0.3 to 1.2), Julio César Domínguez (-0.2 to 1) from Cruz Azul and Avilés Hurtado (-0, 2 on 1) from titleholder Pachuca.
