New MagentaMobil tariffs at Telekom bring family benefits

At the beginning of May, Telekom had to remove the StreamOn option from all tariffs due to a court order. Now the network operator has announced new mobile phone tariffs – without StreamOn and with a savings option. However, only certain users benefit from the latter.

Telekom’s new MagentaMobil tariffs can be booked from July 1st. The provider would like to compensate for the loss of the StreamOn option with more data volume. He also starts the so-called “PlusKarte”. Users who book additional cards with their tariff save money. The tariffs are still expensive overall.

More data volume, but without StreamOn

Anyone who hoped that Telekom would reduce the prices for their mobile phone tariffs after StreamOn was discontinued will be disappointed. Furthermore, the offers are comparatively expensive. The prices for the smallest package start at EUR 34.95 for just 5 GB of data and range up to EUR 84.95 per month for the unlimited tariff. Compared to the previous offers, customers still save, because Telekom has increased the data volume included in all of its tariffs. However, the additional data must also compensate for the missing StreamOn option. With it, users could, for example, stream unlimitedly, use social media or gamble on their mobile phones without using up data volume. StreamOn was therefore a worthwhile option, especially for heavy users, especially with low data volume in the tariff.

Overall, the increase in the included data volume must be viewed with a pinch of salt – as positive as the step is. Because where customers now get more, there is less elsewhere. But how are Telekom’s new MagentaMobil tariffs structured? TECHBOOK introduces them.

Telekom’s MagentaMobil tariffs from July 1st

Instead of four MagentaMobil tariffs, Telekom now offers five to choose from. They all bring an all-network flat rate to the German networks, an SMS flat rate and an internet flat rate with varying levels of inclusive volume. Access to Telekom’s 5G network is also possible with the MagentaMobil tariffs and allows surfing at a maximum speed of 300 Mbit/s downstream and 50 Mbit/s upstream. The tariffs can be booked with a minimum term of 24 months or as a flexible variant that can be canceled monthly.

The MagentaMobil XS for EUR 34.95 per month is the smallest Telekom tariff and offers 5 GB of data volume. Telekom has not yet offered an XS tariff, so a comparison is not possible here. The MagentaMobil S, on the other hand, is available in both the previous and the new tariff portfolio. He previously offered 6 GB of data volume, which Telekom has now raised to 10 GB. The price has remained the same at EUR 39.95 per month.

The situation is similar with the MagentaMobil M from Telekom. Previously, 12 GB of data volume was available for EUR 49.95. 20 GB are now included in the tariff. With the MagentaMobil L, the data volume increases from formerly 24 GB to 40 GB – an increase of 16 GB at the same price of 59.95 euros per month. The MagentaMobil XL, Telekom’s unlimited tariff, has remained unchanged. Here, customers receive a genuine data flat rate without throttling for EUR 84.95.

It is nice that Telekom also grants existing customers the higher data volume in the MagentaMobil tariffs. You will be automatically upgraded to the new inclusive volume on July 1st.

Price advantages through additional cards

Telekom is particularly focusing on the additional cards that can be booked at the MagentaMobil tariffs. The new offer is called PlusKarte and allows you to use additional SIM cards with your own cell phone number, which can access the same tariff conditions as the main card. The more PlusKarte you book at a MagentaMobil tariff, the cheaper it is for each individual.

Torsten Brodt, head of mobile communications at Telekom Germany, describes the offer as follows: “We know that our customers have high expectations of our tariffs. More data volume, flexibility and price advantages for the family are right at the top of the wish list. There is not only more data volume. It’s also worth it in terms of price, the more of your loved ones you bring along.”

Telekom charges EUR 19.95 for the first additional card for a MagentaMobil tariff. Each additional card costs EUR 9.95 per month. An example: If users book the MagentaMobil M with two additional cards, the monthly costs are 79.85 euros. Each person then receives their own cell phone number and 20 GB of data volume per month. Instead of EUR 49.95 each, however, they only pay EUR 26.62 per person per month. If more users share the tariff, it becomes even cheaper.

Conclusion on the new Telekom tariffs

Telekom’s plus card offer is actually a good idea, but it is particularly worthwhile for families in which one member takes over the main contract. And the provider advertises it explicitly for them. The PlusKarte is less suitable for friends or acquaintances due to the uniform billing, since someone almost always has to pay in advance. And who in the group switches to the same Telekom tariff at the same time?

All in all, many are certainly pleased that you can now get more data for the money from Telekom. A large number of customers will certainly benefit from this. But anyone who has used StreamOn very often so far will miss the option, because a streaming or gaming flat rate sometimes cannot compensate for the extra data.

Overall, Telekom’s new MagentaMobil tariffs are still in the premium range. There are other providers in the same network who offer their tariffs much more cheaply, especially now that Telekom has to forego a unique selling point with the discontinuation of StreamOn. An example here are PennyMobil and ja!mobil, two prepaid providers that operate in the Telekom network. Here you can get 3 GB of data for the all-net flat rate for just EUR 7.99 per month. However, without 5G and only with a maximum speed of 25 Mbit/s.
