Developer Riot Games has announced new competition formats for the international League of Legends tournaments Worlds and Mid-Season Invitational (MSI).
The LoL World Championship, which is scheduled to take place in South Korea in autumn, will undergo fundamental changes, especially in the early stages of the tournament. The group stage will be replaced by a Swiss system similar to that used in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournaments.
There will be no more worthless LoL games with eliminated teams
Teams with three wins advance to the next round, with three losses they are eliminated. There will be no more worthless games with teams that have already been eliminated. After that, the eight best teams go into the knockout round as usual.
The innovations at the (MSI), which will be held in London this year, are even greater. The regional leagues LEC, LCK, LPL and LCS will each have two teams in the future, with the first-placed teams skipping the preliminary round. For the first time, the playoffs will be played in a double-elimination format, in which losing teams are given a second chance in the lower half of the tournament.
