Patrick Laine applied for the treatment program of the NHL and the players’ association NHLPA on Sunday.

According to Iltalehti’s information, it is a matter related to mental health, not, for example, abuse of alcohol, drugs or painkillers. Laine is an absolutist.

Laine, who represents the Columbus Blue Jackets, applied to the program voluntarily. He is not in a nursing home, but at home.

No timetable has been set for the forward’s return to the rink. It’s not certain if there will be a return this season.

Laine’s statement

Laine has had to take breaks from hockey this season due to injuries.

In the early season, the Finnish striker had to by Rasmus Andersson the target of a tackle aimed at the head. In December, Laine’s collarbone was broken. He has not returned to the rink since the injury.

The long absences have meant a momentary relief from the pressures of the rink. On Monday, Laine released a statement about his participation in the treatment program.

– I have recognized how important it is to prioritize my mental health and well-being, Laine wrote.

– Ice hockey has been my passion and my life, but I have realized that I have to use this time to focus on myself in order to perform in the best possible way.

Laine is playing his eighth season in the NHL. The Finn, who was traded to Columbus in the middle of the 2020–2021 season, has scored 6+3=9 in 18 matches this season.
